COLIN EDWARDS of Bath Golf Club took the County Championship for the 10th time in an exciting play off from Mike Walls (Taunton & Pickeridge).
On a day ideal for golf and with a course in superb condition it was to be expected that a high standard of play would be in evidence for this the County's premier trophy. 60 players were accepted to take part and were drawn from 17 clubs across the County. During a day that started of very calm, even a little damp, through the afternoon's gathering wind it was pedigree that came through when Colin and Mike met in the play-off.
Colin is a current England International player and ranks among the all time top amateur handful of players with in excess of 75 caps, whereas Mike, who has 18 England International caps to his name, gained his honours during the 1980's.
Bradley Whittock (Saltford G C) came the nearest to give chase over the 36 holes but his 142 was three shots adrift from the 139 of the two top players. Matt Lock 145 (Tall Pines G C) made it into fourth place with Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow G C) tied with Bradley Porter (Tall Pines G C) both on 146.
Another notable performance was the morning 70 from Luke Collins (Mendip Spring G C) a promising Junior Talent and a name to watch in the future.
The team to defend the South West Counties Championship was announced at the end of play and the team is
P Fisher (Tall Pines) Captain
Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow)
David Dixon (Enmore Park)
Matt Lock (Tall Pines)
John Morgan (Clevedon)
