DIMOND WINS SENIORS AUTUMN MEETING
1st October 2004

Ninety-eight seniors took part in the County Seniors Autumn Meeting at Taunton Vale Golf Club on Friday
the 1st October 2004. The course was set up superbly by the greenkeeping staff and although the greens
were a touch slow they were very true. The Met Office was forecasting overcast conditions with rain
later and surprisingly enough only the last few players got caught in the rain. The SGU organising
team were constantly bombarded with “Thank you”, “Well done” and “
We’ll see you next year” so we can only assume that we are doing something right.
Taunton Vale seniors were out in force and early scores clearly indicated they meant business.
With five matches in, the leaderboard was already showing a 37, 38, and 40 and, with a 43, R Dimond
of Taunton Vale was at the top. Inexplicably the scores started to fade from such a promising start
and although other players came in with 40 points and Cornish of Worlebury with 41 points no one
seriously threatened Dimond’s lead. The excitement was the fight for third place with 5 players
carding 40 points. Paterson and Tilden, both of Taunton Vale, were locked on 40 points with 21 points
on the back nine and only the back 3 holes decided the third place with Tilden just edging it by 1 point.
The team event reinforced the home advantage with Taunton Vale “A” and “C” teams locked at the top of the leaderboard
on 116 points and Windwhistle in third place with 114 points. In the event of a tie in the team competition the 4th player’s score is counted and Glover, for Taunton Vale “A” had 35 points with Williams of Taunton Vale “B” 34 points. Nearest the pin on the signature 4th hole was won by Sanders of Isle of Wedmore with 101 inches and on the 14th Glover of Taunton Vale with 43 inches. Paterson, having lost out on third place, picked up the 55-59 age prize, Willerton of Windwhistle the 60-64 prize, Edwards of Taunton Vale the 65-70 prize and Tripp from Clevedon the 70+ prize.
County President Jim Scott thanked Taunton Vale for hosting the event, for providing the course in very good condition and for excellent catering. Terry Benson, Taunton Vale Seniors Vice-captain, said it had been an honour to be asked to host a county event and they looked
forward to doing so again. Finally the President presented the Sir Roger Hollis Cup to R Dimond of
Taunton Vale and the George Smith Cup to Taunton Vale “A” team.
