During 1971 Mr.Albert Clarke joined up with the owner of Unity Farm Mr Bert House and his son Richard to set up Mid Somerset Golf Centre Ltd. This consisted of a target golf range which was situated where the Farmer’s Tavern stands today and a short 12 hole golf course.

In the winter of 1972/73 it attracted enough golfers to warrant the formation of a Target Golf League. Arising from this a dozen or so golfing enthusiasts held discussions with the owners about forming a Brean Golf Club and with their agreement the project went ahead with Ken Mears as the first Club Captain. By the end of 1974 Brean Golf Club had over 50 members and this number doubled in the following year.

During the early years the course layout changed frequently and much of the basic work such as land drainage was done by local enthusiasts so all credit to them for doing this essential work.

In May 1975 Mr. Bert House accepted the position of Club President and some 30 years later he still holds that office. He suggested that to avoid any confusion the members of his Mid Somerset Golf Club became members of Brean Golf Club and this further increased the membership numbers such that in 1976 the Club was well established and became affiliated to the Somerset Golf Union. At this time the Club appointed Ivor Yard, a well known local professional golfer as its first Professional.

In 1978 the layout was changed to a full length 9 hole course which provided a formidable test of 5530 yards when playing an 18 hole round. Also in 1978 the Wessex League was formed with Brean being a founder member and thus the Club made new friends and became involved with home and away matches.

During 1978/9 the driving range was dismantled to make way for the development of Brean Leisure Park. Thus it was that the good old wooden clubhouse was removed and facilities at the Leisure Centre were used until the new clubhouse, changing rooms and Professional’s shop were built.

The opening of the clubhouse in April 1984 was performed by Eric Betty a Past President of the SGU and County Secretary at that time. At the same time five new holes on land at the north end of the course were also opened. In the following year another four holes were added utilising land on the eastern side which then made the course up to the full 18 holes and in 1987 further adjustments were made to the layout which increased the overall yardage to 5565 with a par of 69 and an SSS of 67. The first 25 years or so of Brean Golf Club has seen constant progress and given much pleasure to its golfing members.
