On Monday 27th March 1893, Robert Alexander Grant was elected Captain of the Golf Section of Wells Amateur Athletic Club. Supervised by the Professional at Burnham & Berrow, the members formed 6 holes in a field on Milton Hill. By the following year there were 90 members. Ladies were encouraged to join but were only permitted to play before 2.OOpm each day except Wednesdays when they could play all day.

1895 saw the transfer of the Golf Section from Milton Hill to the new links at King Castle Wood.

The formation of Wells (Somerset) Golf Club Ltd took place in October 1913.

Articles of Association were drawn up and the Company was registered on 15 th October with 150 members. Money to buy the 30 acres on which the course was sited was raised mainly by the issue of Debentures at £5 each and a suitable building for use as a Clubhouse was purchased at auction for £527.

The 1914 and 1939 Wars caused revenue to fall substantially but the Club survived by renting some of the land for animal grazing. This continued throughout the 1950’s and at the beginning of the 1960’s the Club was becoming financially sound and greens equipment was purchased. 4 acres of land adjoining the course was purchased for £1000 plus costs and this provided an area for a new Clubhouse. Fund raising commenced, a bank loan was organised and the new Clubhouse was opened on 26th November 1966 by Charles Laws of the Somerset Golf Union.

By 1972 membership had increased to 228 and re-modelling and improvements to the course continued. SSS 69, 5888 yards.

In the early 1980’s with a loan from the Brewery, a new kitchen was built on to the Clubhouse.

In 1982, more land was purchased and this allowed the course to be extended and opened as an 18 hole course.

A new Professional’s Shop was opened in 1987.

By the end of 1988, applications for membership were added to a waiting list. A unique situation in the Club’s history.

1989 saw the appointment of George Ellis as the first full time Secretary. Wells had now become a “proper” business.

In 1990 new land was purchased and a further four holes were developed. These were opened in 1993, Club Centenary Year.

A Driving Range was built in 1996/7 with monies refunded from VAT.

In 1998 a solicitor’s letter was received with the news that an anonymous Benefactor had made an offer of an interest free loan to be used towards the building of a new Clubhouse. His kind offer was accepted and building commenced in 2001. The new Clubhouse was opened on 16th November 2002.
