SGU Finishes Season on a high as they impart the only defeat of the season on the 2009 Channel League Champions.

Channel League SGU Vs Glamorgan Result

Saltford Golf Club - Sunday 4th October 2009

Somerset bt Glamorgan  8 ½   - 6 ½

In the final Channel League match of the season, the Somerset team showed their resolve by being the only team to inflict a defeat on the 2009 Channel League Champions, Glamorgan.

On an true autumnal day at Saltford Golf Club, an SGU team over half of which were Saltford Club members, were determined to finish the season on a high after the disappointing defeat to Gloucestershire at Clevedon back in August.  The challenge was to beat Glamorgan who had already secured the 2009 league crown, by 2 points more than we needed Gloucestershire to beat Gwent, (playing on the same day), while gaining a minimum of 10 ½ points, in order to finish runners up in the league.

The team started well in the morning foursomes.  Laurie Canter and David Gregory secured the first point of the day with a good 4/2 victory. After a slow start to the round, the pair found their form on the back nine holes to overcome the Glamorgan pair with a barrage of eagles and birdies over the final few holes of the round.

Charlie Cossins and Louis Boston, on their second outing as a foursomes pairing in the 2009 league, continued their unbeaten run to secure the second point, while Ellis Cook returned to the 1st team for a convincing 7/5 win with foursomes partner Max Brittan, a gritty player and tough man to beat on any course, let alone in his, "own back yard"!

With narrow defeats in the other 2 games, Somerset entered lunch 3 - 2 ahead.  Conscious that Glamorgan had beaten Gloucester at Chipping Sodbury only a couple of weeks before, having been 5 - 0 down at lunch, there was certainly to be no room for complacency!

Again, the +3 handicapper, Laurie Canter, who has to be congratulated on his call up to the England A squad, showed the great form he has demonstrated throughout the season to secure the first point of the afternoon with a good 2/1 win.  Like the vast majority of the matches in the afternoon, many were to go to the final few holes, with marginal victories for both sides, until Max Brittan and Ellis Cook, like Laurie Canter secured their 2nd point for the day to seal the match victory for Somerset.

While Somerset did not manage the 10 ½ point objective, (which transpired to be irrelevant due to the Gloucestershire heavy defeat of Gwent), the squad must be congratulated on this very good win.

The SGU would like to re-iterate it's thanks to Saltford Golf Club for their hospitality, and many of their members who showed support for the team on the day.

The SGU squad now approaches the winter, as a united group of strong, maturing players, who I'm confident, will build on their experience gained in 2009, to achieve as individuals and for the County in 2010.

Steve Haines - SGU Captain.

Channel League SGU v Gloucestershire Result

Clevedon Golf Club – Sunday 2nd August 2009

Somerset lost to Gloucestershire 4 - 11

The Somerset team arrived at Clevedon Golf Club to some rare summer sunshine.  Although wet under foot, it was a pleasure to say that for a change, the weather was not to play a significant part in the day!

The Somerset team initially had only two changes from the winning side against Wiltshire, with Laurie Canter returning to the side during his strong season on the national amateur circuit and Craig Adams returning to the team also on form after winning the Farrington Club championship the week before.  Unfortunately, due to suddenly being taken ill on the Friday, Somerset County Champion Curtis Edwards was forced to pull out, with Sam Day stepping up from the second team match at Henbury Golf Club in his place.

A tough and tight morning in the foursomes was to ensue, with 3 of the 5 matches resulting in a half, but with Gloucestershire taking the other 2 matches, they went to lunch 3 ½ - 1 ½ ahead.

After 6 holes in the afternoon, the SGU team had started well and appeared to be ahead in the lion’s share of the singles matches.  Somerset fielded South West Counties Champion Phil White against the experienced Matt Stanford with a good tussle taking place, ultimately resulting in a halved match.  Matt Kippen, having won the Hawkins Trophy only the week before, also came in with a strong win, so establishing a good foundation for Somerset.  Unfortunately, despite fielding a strong mid order and tail, the remaining Somerset team unfortunately folded to the Gloucestershire team, with the exception of Laurie Canter, who continued to impress and show his continued form with a convincing 8/7 victory.  In fairness to his Gloucestershire competitor, Paul Garland, I believe on his depute, Paul was unfortunate to be paired against the strong Canter who was about 7 under par for the 11 holes in which he managed to seal his victory.

We would like to again express out thanks to Clevedon Golf Club, it’s members and staff for the courtesy showed during the day. The course was well presented with some challenging pin positions!  The hospitality shown by Jim Cunning, the pro and catering staff, also ensured a very smooth running day, even if the result was not as Somerset would have wished!

Team Somerset although certainly not out of the running for the 2009 Channel League at the moment, with only one game to come against Glamorgan at Saltford in October, the ultimate outcome of the league, is now unfortunately in the hands of the other Counties.

Team Somerset will however hold their heads high and be looking for a strong finish to the season at Saltford in October!

Convincing win for Somerset!

Channel League - SGU Vs Cornwall Result

The Mendip Golf Club - Sunday 12th July 2009

Somerset bt Cornwall 13 ½  - 1 ½

The Somerset team met at 8am at Wells Golf Range. As the squad arrived fine rain swept across the range, but only 15 minutes later, the sun had broken through, the sky was blue, and it was like a different day.

Adrian Bishop, Somerset County Coach joined the squad to offer some last minute guidance and former SGU Captain Shaun Palmer, welcomed the squad with complimentary bacon sandwiches.  Our thanks go to Adrian and Shaun for their kind hospitality.

By the time we left the range, shortly after 8.30, the clouds had once again drawn in and by the time we arrived only a short 10 minute drive up the road at The Mendip, drizzling rain had once again set in.  The weather pattern for the first hour of the day was to continue for the remainder of the morning.

The weather however did not deter the Somerset team who took an early lead in the match, going into lunch 4 - 1 ahead.  However, having recovered to win only two weeks previously away to Devon having been 4 - 1 down, the team were well aware that there would certainly be no room for complacency.

Complacency however was not on the agenda for the SGU team in the afternoon singles.  After 9 holes, Somerset were up in all 10 matches and continued directly on this vein to win 9 ½ of the 10 singles in the afternoon, as Somerset romped home to a 13 ½ - 1 ½ victory.

Laurie Canter secured the half, playing number one.  But nothing should be taken away from Laurie for this half, currently on form following a successful week where he won the Midland Youths with a very creditable 4 round total of 12 under par.  We would like to congratulate Laurie on this success.

With both the Tilman Trophy at Burnham & Berrow and the South West Boys in the week ahead, we wish the SGU players well and hope this form continues.

This strong win against Cornwall, unbeaten in their previous 3 matches of the 2009 Channel League, keeps the Somerset team in the hunt for the 2009 Channel League title.  The team now head to Broome Manor to play Wiltshire on the 19th July.

Succesful Weekend for SGU in Channel & Wessex Leagues

Channel League SGU Vs Devon Result

Churston Golf Club - Sunday 28th June 2009

Somerset bt Devon  8 - 7

Devon invited the Somerset team back to Churston after heavily defeating us there 2 years ago, and beating us at home in 2008 on their way to winning the Channel League, this was never going to be an easy match!  However, the youthful Somerset team, growing in experience all the time, was not to be fazed.

The Somerset team arrived at Churston on a hot and sunny Saturday afternoon.  With a light breeze directly down wind at the first, the team was to spend plenty of time that afternoon surveying the course.  Nearly 5 hours to be exact!  The course was hard under foot and it was clear that the knowledge of the "local bounce" was going to prove invaluable.

The Sunday morning by contrast was a very different day to the Saturday.  The 1st was directly into a steady breeze with an overcast sky threatening rain and making the air feel heavy.  It was the sort of day a swing bowler playing cricket would be in his element.  This "swing" certainly seemed to baffle the players on the 1st hole, with not one of the Devon or Somerset players hitting Churston's long, 240yrd opening par 3.

Devon's local knowledge was to again serve them well and after 11 holes in the morning the hosts were up in 4 matches and down in only one, but with no more than 2 holes difference in any match.  Unfortunately, the score remained as such as Devon went into lunch 4 - 1 up.  Charlie Cossins and Laurie Canter were the victorious Somerset pair, but note should be made of Matt Kippen & Dave Gregory who fought well on the back nine to bring their match back to all square battling to the end in a match they ultimately lost by 1 hole.  3 - 2 at lunch would have been reasonable at lunch where as 4 -1 down suddenly presented a mountain to climb!

Laurie Canter however firmly set the pace in the afternoon, beating the England "A" squad player, Billy Hemstock 4/3.  Charlie Cossins followed with another good win and with Matt Lea winning the 18th to half his match against James Dimond, the match was coming to life.

The forth match was to be a, "battle of the big young guns", as Somerset Junior Captain, Ellis Cook played the tall and lean, 17 year old, Ryan Fricker from Yelverton.  Despite Cook holing his bunker shot on the par 4 16th for an eagle 2, in a back nine holes riddled with birdies, Fricker was to see the better of Cook on the afternoon over the last 2 holes to gain the first point of the afternoon for Devon.  Cook although disappointed by the result can take heart from the quality of golf played and we hope he will build from this experience in his first ever Channel League match.

Good wins were to follow in the strong middle order with Somerset convincingly winning the next 4 matches securing at least a halved match.  With Stu Ponfield playing 9 losing to David Blick, the result was therefore left in the hands of Saltford's Max Brittan requiring only a half to secure the victory for Somerset.  Max Brittan, a "slight" young gentleman, but with grit and experience beyond his years, was to intimidated by the tall and experienced Devon "tail gunner", Damion Gee.  This match was all square after 16 holes.  Gee, taking the honor on 17, slightly over pitched his approach to the par 3, his ball just running over the back.  Brittan stepped up as the audience of Devon and Somerset teams surrounded the back of the green and hit one of the best approach shots seen at 17 all afternoon to about 8ft below the hole.  Gee with a "slippery" chip down and across the slop was to leave his chip 6 feet short, leaving an equally tricky put.  Brittan narrowly missed his put leaving Gee with a put to keep Devon in the match.  As Gee's put slipped past the hole, the Somerset team, although delighted remained gracious as Paul Newcomb (Devon Captain) offered his hand and congratulations to Steve Haines (Somerset Captain).

The Somerset team remain in the hunt for the 2009 Channel League title as they head to The Mendip to play Cornwall on the 12th July.

South West Week Squad

A message from the Somerset County President, Dennis Longden

For some of you it will be your first South West Week which you will face with both excitement and nervousness, just relax in the knowledge that, as a team, you are the best in Somerset and fully deserve to be part of this great golf week.

Many of you have progressed as a group of 14 year olds to the first team and have forged long lasting friendships and healthy rivalry within our County set up. This week provides you with a wonderful opportunity to make some  lasting friendships in the wider golfing world, and many players from this competition over the years have gone on to the professional ranks and international fame.

Since my first South West Week five years ago there is no doubt in my mind that the standard of golf being played has improved beyond all recognition, thanks to the improved coaching and development programmes put in place by Somerset Golf Union. Warm weather coaching in Spain, mentoring by a former Ryder Cup player and the constant attention of our County Coach have all conspired to bring you to this week better prepared than at any time in our history and certainly with the potential to win Tuesday’s team event.

I hope that you will put the knowledge and skill that you have all acquired to good use at this event. You have the potential and ability to take Somerset to the County Finals, we will provide the necessary support for you but I believe that this year is the year for you to deliver on that potential. Go out there and win it boys, for yourselves, for your supporters and for Somerset.

One final point, we supporters come to South West Week because we enjoy doing so, make sure that amidst the cut and thrust of the golf that you also enjoy the week.

Best wishes and good luck to you all,

Dennis.

A message from the Captain

South West Week has been the focus of our efforts as squad for the past few months and I hope you are as delighted and thrilled as me to be part of, “Team Somerset”, for this prestigious occasion.

Every player selected has been chosen for their individual performance over the past few months and commitment shown to the County.  However, we go to Broadstone as a team.  Only as a team will we successfully place Somerset as South West Week victors in the annals of history.

very single player in “Team Somerset” is capable of beating every player you could possibly face during the week.  Be confident in yourself and your ability.

The last South West week held at Broadstone was in 2002 when Somerset were runners up to Dorset in the Strokeplay.  In 2009 our goal is simple, we aim to step up!

Victory on Tuesday is objective number one for the week.  The 6 players for the strokeplay will be informed on the Monday evening.  We will select the 6 who we believe will provide us with the best chance of achieving our team goal.  However, I want every man in the team to go out on the Tuesday with the goal of winning the individual title.  Again, you are without any doubt all very capable of doing this.

Each day we will have a team meeting in which I would like everyone to participate.  Should however any of you individually have any concerns, at any time during the week, then please, please, speak to me.

I would ask you all to be mature in attitude and sportsman like in etiquette.  You represent the County, but you also represent yourself.  Please be representative of the sort of person you would like to be associated with.

Above all, we play this sport for our love of the game - please enjoy the week!

Thanks in anticipation for your support and commitment.   I look forward to watching some great golf from Team Somerset, on a great course, with the aim of achieving a great victory!

Steve

Sun Shines on SGU Squad Early In The Season

SGU Squad March 2009

The SGU squad had a successful day at The Mendip golf club on Sunday 31st March.  On the first day of British Summer Time, the weather was perfect and the course for the time of year was presented in fabulous condition.

Foursomes practice in the morning over 9 holes was followed by a friendly triangular match in the afternoon between the 6 oldest, 6 youngest and 6 players of ages in between of the 18 members of the squad in attendance.  The players also recorder their scores and some good performances were produced.

Laurie Canter recorded a 4 under par 67, Max Brittan 2 under par 69, Stu Ponfield and Curtis Edwards both shot 1 under par 70's.  At the close of the day, the teams for the first Channel and Wessex League matches of the season against Gwent on the 19th April were announced.  Details of the team can also be found on this web site.

We very much look forward to returning to The Mendip on the 12th July for the Channel League match against Cornwall.  The captain and squad would like to thank Jim Scott and the other staff at The Mendip for the hospitality shown.  We would also like to thank the members of The Mendip for offering us the courtesy of their course.

Channel League SGU Vs Gwent Result

Newport Golf Club - Sunday 19th April 2009

Gwent beat Somerset  9 - 6

Playing an experienced Gwent side at a course, Newport,  where local knowledge certainly assists greatly saw the home side come through in the end.  After a disappointing morning where Somerset came out 3.5 - 1.5 down, early signs in the afternoon were that Somerset were in the ascendency.

Unfortunately in the afternoon singles Curtis Edwards, playing top, lost 1 down against Welsh International Joe Vickery, when he was 1 up with 3 to play, and with Craig Adams losing 2/1 when he was 3 under par, impetus had returned to Gwent. Marvelous wins for Matt Kippen, Phil White, Stu Ponfield and Max Brittain had given Somerset a chance. But, both Gwents experience and local knowledge helped them through to their first victory of the season in what was a closely fought afternoon."
