Record Entry for Category Championships - 2008
Championship Chairman Dennis Longden was delighted with the number of entries for this year's championships with 101 players expected to turn up at Stockwood Vale on Sunday 31st August. As is usual we had 4 who notified by phone that morning that they would not be able to attend and of course 3 others who just did not show up for their tee time. Play was delayed for about 20 minutes due to fog blanketing the course and play commenced at 9.20 am but by 10.30 am the organisers had caught up the delay and players were teeing off on time.
Category 2 players were first off the tee and it became obvious that the course was playing difficult as the early scores were 80 for Horlock, Mumford and Seymour. Following them in half hour later was Emery of Fosseway with a very good 71 and he remained in the lead throughout the day. Nimmo of Stockwood Vale was last man with a 76 in Category 2 that was good enough for the runner up position. Mumford and Seymour took first and second Net prize.
Early leaders in the Category 3 championship were Copp and White from Frome and they also remained at the top of the leaderboard until White of Wincanton managed to split them on a count back.
In the Category 4 championship the spoils went to Sutton of Brean with Collard, the County Under 14 organiser in second place.
New shields were on display for the first time for each of the Category Championships and Somerset Golf Union are extremely grateful to Geoff Collard for the many hours he spent making the shields. The superb quality of the shields is testament to his skill as a cabinet maker.
Colin Perrett, the Stockwood Vale Club Captain, welcomed Somerset Golf Union and all the players and hoped they had enjoyed the course. He said it had been an honour for the club to host a County Championship.
Dennis Longden, Senior Vice President of Somerset Golf Union thanked the club and members for hosting the championships and apologised on behalf of County President Graham Yates who was away on family business. He also sent good wishes to Elizabeth Sloman for a speedy recovery. Finally he asked Colin Perrett to present the prizes to the winners.
