Canter wins International Championship

Laurie Canter, on extended warm weather training in South Africa, wins their Amatuer Championship

Laurie Canter

Wintering with family friends in South Africa in order to fine tune his game for the new season Laurie entered the South African Amatuer Championship and won the first phase strokeplay to be seeded number one for the matchplay finals. Sixty four players contested the matchplay with Canter working his way through to the final. In the 36 hole final Canter eased into the lead but was pegged back to just one up at the halfway stage. After lunch Canter came out of the blocks with all guns blazing and established a 4 hole lead after nine holes. Winning 10 and 11 but losing the 12th he halved the 13th to win the championship by 6 and 5. Laurie is automatically qualified for the South African Open, a European Tour event, in December and will mark his debut on the tour by playing his first game with last year's winner Richie Ramsay.

Somerset Golf Union executive and all his golfing friends in Somerset send warm congratulations to Laurie and look forward to welcoming him back for the start of the new season.

Phil White takes South Western Counties Championship

Phil WhiteIn a thrilling finish Phil White of Somerset won the South Western Counties Individual Championship with a six under par score of 134. England squad players Billy Hemstock, Miles Mackman and Chris Lloyd, who broke the course record in the afternoon with a 63, could only watch as White played some superb golf in the afternoon for a 5 under 65 to take the title from playing partner Ben Loughrey by one shot.

This win was well deserved by White who disappointingly lost the Somerset County Championship two weeks earlier in a play off at Taunton & Pickeridge.

Curtis Edwards wins Championship play off

2009 County Champion Curtis Edwards

In a dramatic play off Curtis Edwards beat Phil White over 4 holes after both had scored an excellent two under par 136. White had played solid golf throughout the day with two rounds both one under par.
