Junior Champion Club

For the second year running Somerset Golf Union Junior Champion Club was held on the same day as one of our clubs Junior Open. This year it was The Mendip Junior Open and there is no doubt that the new format is successful. One hundred and seventeen juniors entered The Mendip Junior Open and we had a record breaking 30 teams in our competition, however with the "no shows" and late withdrawals 109 actually took part which is absolutely brilliant for junior golf. It is intended to continue with this format and next year we will combine with the Saltford Junior Open. If clubs would like the SGU Junior Champion Club to combine with their Junior Open please let me know, the only stipulation is that it must occur before the end of July as the winners are invited to represent Somerset at the English Golf Union Junior Champion Club Finals in early to mid August.

Junior Champion Club Tournament

The EGU Junior Champion Club Tournament in 2009 will be held at Burghley GC in Lincolnshire on the 8th and 9th August. The team representing Somerset at the finals is Saltford and we wish them much success. A note to the juniors representing Somerset, try not to be nervous as you are their on merit and the team that wins is not necessarily the team with low handicaps, it is the team who can play to their handicaps.

Final note to David Phillips, the Saltford Junior Organiser, who has put a lot of time and energy into junior golf at Saltford. You have earned this success David now take the boys and win the final for all in Somerset, we will be rooting for you.
