This is the third match in the Channel League for Somerset U16’s, which was played at Wells GC on Friday 4th August 2017.

My thanks go to Wells Golf Club for being great hosts of this match. The food was great, the course was in super condition, and all the staff friendly and helpful.

I would also like to thank Paul & Geoff, our President and Vice President respectively, for attending this match and supporting our lads all around the course.

Without going into too much detail the Morning Foursomes were similar to the Monday Foursomes match against Gloucestershire, Poor. Even after a team talk prior to the start of the match, our lads struggled to compete against the Wiltshire lads. The half came from the last pair out Charlie & Sam. This led to a 4 ½ to ½ lunchtime score.

As you can imagine, lunch didn’t go down to well knowing we had to go out in the afternoon and win 7 of the 10 matches.

The afternoon singles started in heavy rain, (which sort of matched my mood!). But after starting the 10 matches Jack & I drove around and found that our lads were a fair match for our opponents.

Early defeats for Alfie & Bailey swung the match towards the away team, but then wins for Dylan, Charlie & Lewis gave the rest of the Somerset lads a boost. Adam for the second match in a row halved his match; also halving his match was our Captain Alix.

After a tough couple of defeats in our other matches, Sam proved his place in the squad is warranted by securing an emphatic 6 & 5 win over his opponent.

This left two matches out on the course, 11 year old Ashton Wylie & Charlie Hooper, both had to win to half the match.

Ashton came up the last 1 up, and won the hole to record a great 2 up win. A lot of pressure for one of Geoff Collard's U14’s but he handled the pressure fantastically, and a great beaming smile to match.

With Charlie 2 up with three to play things looked good, but I think the pressure played a part in him losing the next two holes, so things didn’t look to good with the match being all square on the 18th tee.

With both teams following the match, I believe both lads struggled with the pressure, without going into too much detail Charlie came out the victor by being conceded a put for an Eight, which meant we won the afternoon singles 7 – 3, and halved the match. It was a great comeback by our lads, both Jack and I are proud of all of them, all worked hard and supported their team mates, That’s more like it.

As for Paul, Jeff, Jack & myself that last hole, aged us by ten years, but it was a pleasant way to finish the day.
