Somerset Under 16s succumbed to a 10-5 defeat at the hands of Gloucestershire at Stockwood Vale.
In the morning foursome we lost out 4 games to 1, but in the main each game was closely contested. Alix Kew and Alfie Jubb came up against strong opponents, losing 4 and 3. Charlie Goss teamed up with Dylan Xanh always looked comfortable in their match, but the opposition kept plugging away before our pair eventually secured our first point. The next two games went Gloucestershires' way with the same scorelines of 1 up. Another day it might have been a different story, but our boys will have learnt from the experience, Mikey Nicholls and Timo Scobie came up against a pair in form and were always chasing the game.
We needed a strong start in the singles, but both the opening matches went against us. Dylan losing on the last when a 25 putt from his opponent dropped in to secure the point.
A revival in fortunes seemed on the cards with Charlie, Alix and Mikey winning their games, supported by battling halves from Adam and Sam. Gloucestershire re-asserted their grip on the match, winning the singles by 6 points to 4.
Not the best of days at the office for the Somerset team, and there are some thing the boys can learn from their disappointment. Manager Kev Purdy and Coach Jack Heginbotham will be able to impart some game management thoughts to the team before their next match against Gwent.
