Horrendous weather makes a disappointing end to a great season for the under 14’s.
We played our final match at Dawlish Warren on Sunday with all to play for, we needed a win to secure the Jack Roberts Trophy which we haven’t won since the first time it was played some seven/eight years ago. The boys were all fired up and ready to go except for the heavy rain which didn’t seem to let up. If the match were to be cancelled then the result would be a draw which would mean Dorset wins the trophy, the boys were keen to get wet the course was open so the decision was made and out we all went.
All I have is nothing but admiration for both sides with a constant stream of water running down the grips and over their faces the wind howling at 25 mph yet the lads still had smiles and still buoyant.
The result as it happened was a draw for the morning foursomes which was fair considering what both sides went through. Unfortunately we had to make a decision on playing the afternoon singles, the weather seemed to get worse so we made the call not to play, which was taken out of our hands 2 minutes later by the manager coming out and closing the course.
Ian and myself were convinced our boys would have done well in the singles but wasn’t to be.
The whole squad should be congratulated for a terrific season and with the u12’s coming up the ranks the future looks good for Somerset.
My thanks go to Dawlish Warren for making us very welcome and to the parents for carting all the boys around this year.
