The U 18s final match before EG County finals was held at Long Sutton GC on Friday the 25th August in the Greenaway Trophy v Devon. The weather was glorious with bright sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20’s. The course was well presented and represented a stiff challenge to the players from both Counties.
Both counties had inflicted defeats on Cornwall so the winners would take the Trophy for 2017.
The home team got off to a poor start and took only half a point form the foursomes. Huxley Howell and Louis Archer played well in game that could have gone either way.
Ollie Brimfield, making his debut for the U18s and partner Matt Ison played well and were unlucky to go down in a close game.
It was always going to be an uphill struggle to overturn a 4 point deficit from the morning and early wins for Devon in the first and third games left them firmly in the driving seat.
Ollie Brimfield played some great golf to inflict a 6 and 5 win over his opponent. He holed a good number of putts and was 5 or 6 under gross.
Louis Archer and Huxley Howell played well, Louis lost on the last where Huxley secured a win.
In a number of close games the home side fought hard. Long Sutton player Lewis Coward turned his game around after being 2 down with three to play he halved the match with a pressure putt on the last to win the hole.
Liam O’Mara also took a half point on the last having led for most of his game.
The singles was far more of a contest than the foursomes and the boys were a credit to the county.
My thanks go to Tommy Tulk for helping to make the day run so smoothly , to Long Sutton golf club for looking after both counties and to the additional support from Kevin Purdy, Norman Banfield, Stephen Butterfield and john Paterson. We certainly outnumbered the away support!
Attention now turns to the EG County finals at Northampton County GC from 28th - 31st August . We all wish the team the very best.
