Somerset Grass Roots Challenge 2016

Somerset Grass Roots Championships 2016

This years Championships featured rounds at Tickenham, Isle of Wedmore, Farrington and Mendip Spring with all the courses in great condition. There was record entries at all the venues with the fight for the boys and girls order of merit titles going down to the final event.

The first round at Tickenham featured a familiar name at the top of the boys leaderboard with Jackson Carey the 2015 champion scoring 32pts. Alex Champion took a narrow 1 point lead over her sister Jo in the girls championship.

The next event was held at Farrington and with Jackson Carey away Cameron Fear took the opportunity to move himself into contention for the order of merit by scoring 32pts. Ashton Wiley also played well returning 30pts making it very tight at the top. Jo Champion took the lead in the girls order of merit and won this round beating sister Alex into 2nd place.

The third round at Isle of Wedmore saw Jackson, Cameron and Ashton playing in the same event for the first time. Cameron came out on top with 33pts, Jackson on 32pts and Ashton on 31pts. Theo Anderson Gannon and Alex Marshall playing their first events and shooting 32pts and 30pts also climbed into contention for the final round. The girls lead changed yet again with Alex Champion matching the top boys scores with a brilliant 31pts which gave her a commanding lead going into the final round over sister Jo.

Mendip Spring was the venue for the final round and Alex Marshall continued his good form to win this round but it was not enough to challenge the top two of Jackson and Cameron. There was notable performances by Troy Young, Olly Tripp, Dylan and Rhys John and Lowen Stephens in the younger age groups across all four events. Jo Champion won the final round and beat Frankie Dezis into second place but Alex Champion retained her lead and is the winner of the Somerset Grass Roots Girls 2016 championship. With Jackson not able to improve on his two counting scores Cameron Fear also held onto his lead and became the Somerset Grass Roots Boys 2016 champion.

A thank you must go to all the courses and also all the parents that helped out on the days and I know all the children will be looking forward to next years event.
