E.G.U. NOVEMBER MEETING. The year 2000 Edition of the Rules of Golf will soon be issued and the amendments will affect all of us after January 1st. Once again we golfers are indebted to the Royal Sun Alliance for producing tens of thousands of the pocket sized Rules of Golf book and the pamphlet Golf Rules in Brief Clubs can order bulk supplies on the Sun Alliance order phone 01403 - 232323 There are reportedly interesting changes to the Rules of Amateur Status which are spelt out in the back of the new Rule Book. ENGLISH GOLF The magazine English Golf is to retain its present format throughout next year but the free issue is causing some Individual Members (I.M.S.) to think again because one of the benefits of paying the enhanced subscription was to receive a copy of the magazine. The I.M.S.scheme is being looked at to see how best to proceed. WEB SITES There are many offers to produce web sites for Clubs and it is all rather confusing. The view of the Executive is that Clubs should all move in unison along the lines that will give the best service and also that will produce the best all round commercial benefits. A well known Accountancy firm has been engaged to conduct a survey of what is on offer in terms of all round value and the

report will come out in 2000. All Clubs have had a letter advising them of this. SINGLES MATCHPLAY HANDICAPS THE CONGU recommendation for singles matchplay is "the full difference between the handicaps of the two players". The E.G.U. SSS & Handicap Committee now believe that this should be the EGU recommendation. A view supported by the Championship Committee and endorsed by the Executive. Under Rules of Golf 33.1 Club committees still have the final choice of whether to allow the full difference or stay with ¾. No doubt there will now be much debate. A good way to start a new century. WOODHALL SPA Visitor traffic has been picking up throughout the year with 20,700 rounds having been played and already there are 10500 rounds booked for next year which must be encouraging for the staff who are hard at work promoting the golf there. It is interesting to have a look at the E.G.U.website www. englishgolfunion. org which has links to a lot of golfing information. When you click on the National Golf Centre you will come across an On-Line Booking Form with which to book your date and time of play and in not too far off times your Club may well have the same facility. Did I hear someone say "Perish the Thought".

WITHIN SOMERSET somerset.golfunion.com Progress is being made with a County Card that will spread to around 30 Clubs in Devon and a further dozen or so in Cornwall. The aim is to be able to issue it at the normal end of February time. Hopefully it will benefit players, Clubs and the County funds. Colin Edwards of Bath G.C. has been joined in the England Training Squad by John Morgan of Clevedon G.C.and we wish them well in the forthcoming season. Junior Golf will be under the spotlight this year with a concerted effort between our Junior Coach Peter Green and his fellow Professionals to extend the coaching available and County committee members John Nicholas and John Martin will be actively involved along with the Club Junior Organisers. Taunton Vale G.C. intend to set up a system whereby Juniors from other Clubs will be able to book a round fitting in with other Juniors and Taunton Vale are very generously offering the courtesy of the course which is setting a really positive example. The County Dinner at the Winter Gardens at Weston was attended by 155 golfers who all had a most enjoyable meal followed by entertaining speakers.
