Immediate Past President Dennis Longden with the winners at the Under 14 Championships held at Brean Golf Club. This years Under 14 Champion George Abbott is holding the C F Carr Cup.
Thirty one eager youngsters congregated at Brean Golf Club on Friday 9th April to contest the Under 14 Championship. The day was warm and with little wind the boys could settle down and enjoy the course. With lots of water hazards they would have to think their way round and the monster par 5 seventh hole would provide a stern test. Jake Badger from Mendip Spring was the early leader in the clubhouse with a net 68 but was soon overtaken by Jamie Tomkins of Clevedon with a gross 80 net 67. Once again his lead for best net was shortlived when Kailin Coombes of Farrington returned a very creditable net 65. Hot on his heels, also with a net 65, was George Abbott who went into the lead for the gross championship with a gross 78.
With just 7 players left to complete their round Abbott was looking good but low handicapper Tom Sloman of Taunton & Pickeridge was still out on the course and could well decide who would pick up the C F Carr cup. After winning both his matches against Gloucester the day before at Thornbury Sloman was struggling with his game and could only manage a score of 81 which took him into third place.
County President John Perkins was on duty at the South Western Counties championships and was ably represented by the Immediate Past President Dennis Longden who thanked Brean golf club and their members for the generous use of their course, which was in excellent condition, and presented the prizes to the winners. George Abbott, after receiving the C F Carr Cup and a silver medal, thanked Brean golf club and the Somerset Golf Union organisers.
