The Under 18s travelled to St Pierre (Nr Chepstow) for their final Channel league match on Sunday 16th September.
In the morning foursomes Dylan Xanh and Jake Bovington battled back from being four down to earn a half on the 18th. The Bath pairing of Liam O’Mara and Kieran Bye secured a 4+ 3 win over their opponents to give Somerset 1.5 points from the foursomes. In the other matches there were some good performances from Charlie Hooper and Worlebury’s Callum Tucker but we were unable to covert good play into points.
The afternoon singles got off to a good start and after 9 holes we were in a good position. in the top match Dylan was 2up. A run of birdies form his opponent resulted in a quick turn around with Dylan loosing on the 15th.
Ollie Brimfield played well in a tight match which went to the 18th before he came out the winner 2up.
Jake Bovington impressed with a convincing 6 + 4 winning margin.
Louis Archer was involved in a very tight game. He birdied the 17th to square the match. He lasered the par 3 18th at 211yrds and struck a perfect rescue. Unfortunately he had lasered the fence behind the green and the ball flew over the fence which resulted in a discussion regarding OB. He played a fabulous chip to 3 ft before the OB was confirmed rendering his shot redundant. Gwent won the game 1up. The incident highlights the dangers of using a laser in confined areas!
Alix kew managed to hold on for a 1 up win over his opponents , the Gwent player converted birdie chances on the 16th and 17th holes to take the game down the 18th.
In the final game Callum Tucker playing his first county match played well and stood 1 up on the last. Both players found the putting surface from the tee. Gwent were 20ft away and putted first , the ball lipped out of the hole. Callum had a 15ft put with a severe left to right break. He held his nerve and holes out for a birdie and a good win 2 up.
Kieran Bye and Charlie Hooper played well but found themselves up against strong home players .
The singles went to Gwent 6 - 4 so an overall match victory of 9.5/ 5.5.
The U 18s have finished their season , apart from the Channel league finals day where we have enjoyed success over the last few years. The team for finals day is limited so the majority of players have completed their season.
I wish the U18s moving on every success in their careers including golf and thank them for their contribution over a number of years in most cases.
Finally thanks to St Pierre for hosting the match and to Graham Harris of Gwent for rearranging the fixture .
