Somerset U16’s v Gwent U16’s

Sunday 7th October 2018

The re-arranged match against Gwent was held at Wells GC. My Thanks go to Wells for hosting the second Under 16 Match this season. I would also like to thank Tommy Tulk for stepping for me, until I got to the club at 2.15.

Morning Foursomes

Tommy informs me that the morning foursomes played over 12 holes was a tight contest in all the matches.

Somerset started well with the pairing of Sam & Ollie picking up a half a point, then the strong pairing of Adam & Bailey taking the next full point. Our third pairing of U14’s, Alex & Dewi couldn’t overcome the Gwent pair & narrowly lost their match.

The fourth pairing of Jackson & Under 16 debutant Will Brookes played well and narrowly lost on the last hole. The final pairing of Sam & Archie came in with a solid point which gave us the share of the spoils in the morning.

Singles

A surprise defeat for Ollie didn’t start the afternoon singles well, but then solid wins for Bailey, Adam & Sam Floyd looked like put Somerset in the driving seat. Up next was Dewi John who looked to have his game in the bag, but a strong comeback from his opponent saw Dewi lose on the 18th green.

But yet another strong game from Alex, gave us a 4 games to 2 lead in the afternoon, one more point would at least give Somerset a match draw.

Unfortunately, the game swung in favor of the Gwent team as our final 4 players couldn’t pick up the point needed to secure a half.

This was the final match in the Channel League, and I would like to say thank you to all of the players that have turned out for the U16’s.

I would also like to say a big thank you to Sam Floyd for taking on the Captaincy this year.

And I would like to wish all the lads moving up to the U18’s the best for next year.
