Match Report

Somerset U16’s v Gloucestershire U16’s

Monday 30th July 2018

After problems with team selection it was pleasing to get the U16 Channel League underway, with this match against Gloucestershire, played at Filton Golf Club.

Morning Foursomes

Unfortunately due to a mix up with emails Gloucestershire could only field 9 players for the morning, which although was good for us, as we were conceded the point, it was sad for the two lads who didn’t have a match.

Our first pairing out was Bailey & Lewis who overwhelmed the opposition winning by 6 & 5. Our Captain Sam Floyd & Harry followed on, and soon took an early lead in the match, but a good fight back by the opposition lead to a Half.

The third group out, consisted of the two under 14 players of Ashton & Wylie who looked strong from the start and went onto win 3 & 2.

Then came the pairing of U14 Sam Pepler & our new U16 player Oliver Hayden, who after a good tussle of a match, finally came out on top.

Although the final pairing of Jack & Archie was already decided, it was an ideal opportunity for both players to ease into the county U16 set up.

So the final result for the morning Foursomes was 4 ½ to a ½  . this put us into great shape for the afternoon singles, so with only 3 ½ points required out of a possible 10, the afternoon should be a walk in the park. OR NOT?

Singles

Having watched all ten singles matches tee off, Jack & I went to the 8th green to watch the matches come through, after all had passed, things looked pretty safe, with the majority of the Somerset players being up around the turn.

Bailey soon finished his match with a great win 6 & 5, this now meant only 2 ½ points required, looking good??

Sam Floyd came up against a strong opponent & from being 3 up at the turn unfortunately lost on the 18th. Then very quickly came defeats for Kyle, Sam P, Oliver & Archie, things started to look a little rocky, then Ashton came in with a great 6 & 4 win, which left use wanting a ½ to get a draw or 1 pint for the win.

So all eyes were on Harry who was 1 up going down 18, but lost the hole so could only secure a half point, great that we could not lose but from being 4 ½ points up from the morning we wanted the win.

So all the attention went onto Jack Coward, who from reports was 1 down coming down 17, now with both teams and parents around the green, Jack. after a great drive, hit a fantastic  long iron onto the left edge of the green, his opponent missed the green & could only make a 5, two putts later Jack was now level, going up 18.

Jack then hits a great drive up 18, but sadly his opponent hooks his shot out of bounds, which all but gives the hole to Jack.

A sad way to win the match but, but a well-deserved win over one of the stronger counties, bring on Glamorgan next Monday.
