Match Report
Somerset U16’s v Wiltshire U16’s
Sunday 16th 2018
Today’s match against Wiltshire was held at North Wilts GC. Which is set high up on Salisbury plain, just north of Devises. A friendly club with a well presented course.
Morning Foursomes
With Somerset still in the reckoning for the league title, this match was a must win, with this in mind it was important for us to do well out of the morning matches.
First out was the pairing of Lewis & Harry who was up against strong opposition, the Somerset pair held onto the shirt tails of the Wiltshire pair but sadly went down 2 & 1.
Match 2, of Matthew & Adam, & match 3 of Sam & Dewi saw these two games swing one way to the other, both matches went down the last, which resulted in two much need half points.
Match 4, had the U14 pairing of Kyle & Alex helping out the U16 campaign. The step up did not deter this pairing, and saw off the Wiltshire pair, giving us the second point of the morning.
Our final pairing struggled against a strong opposition and never looked like they could overcome the opposition.
The final score for the morning was 3 – 2, so although 1 point down, the Somerset team were confident they could get the result required in the afternoon.
Singles
If I could of took the result after all the 10 singles had come through the seventh hole, I would of do, as we were up in seven matches, all square in two & down in just one match. But as we all know matches can swing in a blink of a eye. So by the twelfth hole the matches had swung around to favor the home side.
Captain Sam Floyd was not having the best of days along with an opponent playing well which resulted in a heavy 7 & 6 defeat.
Next up was Adam who was one down going up the last, but with his opponent in trouble off of the tee, Adam secured a much needed half a point.
Third up was ever consistent Harry Selwyn, Harry held off his opponent all the way around, and came out a worthy winner by 4 & 3.
Lewis Coward stayed on the heels of his opponent, but on the 16th misjudged the strong tail wind, and out his approach shot over the back of the green, and out of bounds, resulting in a 3 & 2 loss.
Things then started to get interesting when our next four players won 3 ½ out 4 points, a point each for Dewi, Matthew & Alex.
A special mention to Alex, who was 7 up after 7 holes, and was 4 under gross, a small revival from his opponent, but still had a easy win of 6 & 4.
We now needed one point from the last two matches, to take the win and a half point to halve the match.
Unfortunately Both Sam & Jack lost which gave the home side the two points need to win the match.
The result was disappointing, but this was a great effort by the team, who supported each other to the end.
