After the summer like conditions of the last couple of days, the rain returned as the teams gathered on the first tee for the first match of the season. The Professional was happy though as he sold some of his stock of umbrellas. Our visitors were faster out of the block than Somerset, although Thomas Richardson led be example in the opening game. He opened up a 3 hole lead at the turn which he never looked like relinquishing. He eventually won 4&2 to give the first point to Somerset.
The next 5 matches all went to Dorset who led after 9 holes in four of the matches. Troy Young was all square at the halfway stage, but some fine play from Lewis Young took the match away from him on the back 9. Freddie, Finley, Luke and Ryan all lost their games which gave Dorset the 5 points needed to win the match.
The last 2 games both went to Somerset as the Red Army tail wagged. Debutant Peter McGivern and his opponent Oliver Clegg both produced some very good golf during their game. This was closely fought all the way before Peter claimed victory on the 17th green to win 2&1. Rhys John also secured a good win overcoming Ollie Tolman on the 17th as well.
We might not have got the win we wanted, but each player gave their all for the team. Whilst there may have been some disappointments along the way, everyone remained positive and displayed great sportsmanship.
We congratulate Dorset on their win and thank them for their part in good spirit the game was played in. Our thanks also to all at Mendip Golf Club who looked after us so well. Packed lunches were provided for the teams and the course was in exceptional condition. It is always a pleasure to visit and enjoy their excellent facilities
