Ollie Smith wins the West of England Under 18 Open Amateur Strokeplay

The idea of running an Under 18 version of the West of England Seniors Scratch Open was originally raised a couple of years ago. It really took off when the 2017 Burnham & Berrow Captain Peter Amos joined forces with the Senior Golfers' Society member Gary Homer  decided to make it a reality. The Somerset Golf Union was invited to join in and planning began in earnest.

Would it take off? Would we generate interest from the players? We set a target of 60 players more in hope than expectation with the view that it might be slow to take off but that it would be a success in time.

Today we have our answer - 66 players out on the course, both boys and girls, with entrants from as far afield as Scunthorpe and Folkestone. An England selector had arrived to check on the form of the players.

The competition has vastly exceeded our hopes, and it looks as though this will become a permanent feature in the Junior golf calendar!
