Report: The match was played in fine weather over a course which was both in excellent condition and had been very well prepared for the match. Tee reservation arrangements had been well organised and all matches proceeded with no hold ups throughout the day

The morning foursomes were keenly contested but, not for the first time this season, a number of our pairs started badly, recovered, but not quite enough to achieve parity

At lunch, we were behind 2 - 3

In the afternoon singles, the overall standard of golf from both teams was consistently high

As the first four singles were shared two apiece, Glamorganshire remained ahead. However, Somerset’s “middle order” performed strongly. Led by Simon Harris in Match 3, Somerset won four out of the following five matches to forge a lead that Glamorganshire, in the end, failed to bridge. Simon’s win was backed up by fine wins from Tim Harris (Match 5) and Ian Perkins, making a welcome return from injury, in Match 6

However, the Somerset “tail” still had to wag – and it did so, admirably

Matches 7, 8, 9 & 10 all finished on the last green with Somerset, crucially, garnering 2 ½ points from them

In Match 7, with “nip and tuck” aplenty, Paddy Maclennan played excellent golf to squeeze out his opponent. After our “bonnie fechter”, Peter Davies, just failed to halve his match, Steve Francis, playing immediately behind, recovered from being two down after 13 to win on the 18th. With victory secure - but unbeknown to him - Steve Thomas halved the final match

Glamorganshire had previously beaten Gwent, Cornwall and Gloucestershire (losing only to Devon). So, our win was a significant scalp for us with which to end our SCL season

Unfortunately, Glamorganshire were unable to stay to participate in the excellent post-match hospitality provided by Bath GC

Our players have learned some hard lessons during what has been a very tough competitive season. Shortly, we’ll be carrying out our end of season review to ensure that all such lessons are incorporated into our strategies for 2018
