The first match for the U 18s after their success at The South Western Counties Championship at Came Down was the Roy Greenaway Trophy match v Cornwall at Trethorne. The weather was variable with sunshine, showers and strong winds. The course provided a stiff test but was well presented with excellent greens.
In the morning foursomes Dyan Xanh (mendip Spring) and Owen Thresher (Minehead) were unlucky in failing to secure a half after a great approach shot left them with a 4 ft putt to win the hole and tie the game. Jake Bovington and Matt Ison (Enmore) battled well but went down on the 16th green. Captain Josh Higgs (Wells) and partner Tom Smith (lansdowne) put in an impressive performance playing some quality golf to secure 4 + 3 win. Bath pairing of Liam O’Mara and Adam Jolly played well and won their match on the 18th green. The final pairing from the U16s of Alfie Jubb and Charlie Hooper (taunton & Pickeridge) played well in a hard fought game eventually winning the 18th to secure a 2 up scoreline. 3 - 2 to Somerset was a good result for team Somerset.
The afternoon singles include 3 halved games which was illustrative of the hard fought nature of the match. Captain Josh Higgs won the 17th and 18th holes to secure a half. Tom Smith responded similarly winning the last to tie his game. Liam O’Mara was unlucky holding a 2 hole lead on the 17th tee he lost the hole to an excellent 25ft putt from Cornwall and the last to some excellent play from his opponent.
Jake Bovington and Matt Ison played well and secured 3+2 and 5+4 wins. So the team needed 2 points from the last 3 games to win the match overall. Alfie Jubb was involved in a tough match and stood 1 down on the 16th tee. He played well to win 2 of the last 3 holes and holed a 6ft putt on the last for a great win.
Charlie Hooper was playing confidently and held a 5 hole lead on the 14th. His opponent claimed a hole but went down on the 15th.
Adam Jolly put the icing on the cake with a good 4 + 3 win. The team took the singles 6.5 3.5 and enjoyed a well deserved 9.5 - 5.5 match win.
My thanks to the boys and the parents for getting them to Cornwall for an early start. We were well looked after by Trethorne and the Cornwall team and are looking forward to the Channel league matches v Wiltshire and Gloucester on the 8th and 10th August.
