Report

It was my pleasure to look after the under 18’s for the Glamorgan match, eight of which were my old under 14’s plus Dewi John who is one of my current under 14 and Kieran Bye from Bath who was playing his first match for Somerset, it was good to see how the boys had matured and the improvement of there golf from there time with Ian Vibert and myself.

We were playing away at the Glamorganshire and were blessed with a sunny last day of summer, the course was well presented, and the greens were in excellent condition.

The morning foursomes didn’t go Somerset’s way with only the first pairing of Dylan Xanh and Sam Floyd having a convincing win on the 16th and Alfie Jubb and Alix Kew bringing Somerset’s only other point home leaving extra work to be done for the afternoon singles.

Huxley Howell managed to bring Somerset a well needed half, Louis Archer was going along nicely with a great 100 yard recovery shot from behind a tree to place it two foot from the hole on the 9th to get back to all square and eventually finishing off his opponent 3 up on the seventeenth.

Sam Floyds opponent ended up in the bunker from 100yards away on the 9th and Sam was in a position to go 2 up but a missed judged shot sent him in the same bunker as well, The Glamorgan lad hit a great bunker shot two foot from the pin, Sam’s ball unfortunately popped out 15 foot short but with nerves of steel Sam sinks his putt and his opponent  misses his two footer giving Sam a two hole advantage and eventually bringing Somerset another well needed point on the 16th.

Alfie Jubb and Adam Jolly had a tough time with Alfie’s opponent playing the equivalent to pro golf and Adam not quite finding his form.

Alix Kew was on top form and decided to tackle the 9th from the 4th fairway, with a well-judged blind shot the ball ends teetering on the bunker mound 20 foot short of the hole but without the need of a putter chips in to go 4up and winning his match on the thirteenth.

Michael Nicholls and U14s Dewi John’s matches were much closer and could of gone either way but unfortunately didn’t go Somerset’s way, but debutant Kieran Bye did him self proud with a well earned half finalising the match at 9-6 to Glamorgan.

I thoroughly enjoyed my day with the lads and catching up on past capers and wish them all a successful future which ever their paths lead them down.
