Today’s match against Glamorgan was held at a well presented Saltford Golf Club, the course seemed to have fared better than a lot of clubs around with the continued dry summer. The staff were very friendly & helpful, & the food was excellent.

Morning Foursomes

Whenever you are up against Glamorgan you know you are in for a challenge & today was no exception.

First match out for Somerset was Sam & Lewis, it was soon apparent that this match was going to be tough going. Our home pairing never looked settled & if I’m honest both looked a little golfed out. which was highlighted with the 4 & 2 lose.

Second out was the pairing of Harry & Stanley, this was our only full point in the morning with the home pairing a fine match for their strong opponents, winning 1 Up.

Our third pairing of Adam & Matthew in fairness are both coming back from injury so again never looked like a match for their opponents, losing 5 & 4.

Fourth out was the undefeated U14 pairing of Ashton & Kylie, this chirpy couple fought hard & stepped up to the challenge of playing U16 golf against the probably the strongest team in the league, & only losing 2 & 1.

Our final pair of Sam & Jackson worked hard to get to the 17th 2 Up. But perhaps a few nerves & a little naivety allowed the opposition to win both the 17th & 18th for an unexpected half.

Giving a well-oiled machine of Glamorgan a 2 point lead at lunch looked a little ominous for the afternoon singles.

Singles

Getting 6 points out of the afternoon just for a half, looked a tall order with the opposition in fine form, & things got even worse with defeats for Lewis & Sam.

A chance of getting anything out of the match looked to be slipping away, but a win for the quiet but determined Harry Selwyn helped to patch up what looked to be a disappointing day. Adding to this was a defeat for Adam Jolly who put up a strong defence, but finally going down 2 &  1.

Things were not looking good, but then came a chink in the Glamorgan armour when wins for Stanley, Kylie & Matthew made things look a little more interesting. Adding to this was a great win for U16 debutant Jackson Carey defeating his opponent 5 & 3.

Now things were looking very different Somerset had won 5 points, 1 more point & we could get a draw out of the match.

Left out on the course was U14 Ashton Wylie, who we knew was 1 down through 12 holes, we caught up with Ashton on the 16th where he had just gone 1 up, after a great drive up 16 he then hit a long iron onto the 16th green which results in him going two up with 2 to play.

The 17th at Saltford is as I’m sure you are aware is a great par 3 drop hole, Ashton hit his shot into the greenside bunker, his opponent hit a poor shot, and has to hit a second ball onto the green.

All that was left was for Ashton to get out of the bunker, but with the backdrop of a pond & stream this was a heart in the mouth shot. No need to worry, with nerves of steel Ashton puts his ball to within 2 feet of the pin, one putt gave Somerset the point needed to secure the half.

Being somebody who always wants to win, I’m never too sure celebrating a draw is a positive thing. However in this case I believe a high five is required, as Glamorgan is a strong county, also the way we came back to get a half is worth a smile.

It also means we are still in the game for top spot in the league.
