Somerset retain the Matchplay Shield

We will have to check the record books, but this is surely one of the finest South West Weeks; that Somerset have enjoyed. They overcame a strong and spirited Gloucester team by 8.5 - 5.5 to retain the Matchplay Shield. They had already won the Strokeplay chalenge to win the right to represent the South West in the England County Finals, and Ali Balcombe is the Youths Champion. We still have 3 team members in contention to win the Clifford Burden Trophy for the most points gained by an individual. What a week - and we should be proud of each and everyone of the team.

This match was set up to be the title decider, both counties with unbeaten records and just 0.75 of a point seperating them at the top of the table. Neither side could gain an advantage in the morning singles which finished alll square at 4-4.

The afternoon foursome were again to be the decider, and Somerset took the opening 3 matches to secure the win before Gloucestershire took the final match.
