Report

It was our turn to head for Cornwall, the club was Trethorne near Launceston, although near the border it was still a fair drive so some of the parents went down on the Monday camping or staying in various guest houses, this was essential as the boys managed to get a practice round in. I played there in May and found it a beautiful but a tricky course to play with many blind greens.

I thought I’d treat the boys to some Granny Wobblies Team Fudge, this went down very well and was essential later.

On paper we were slightly the stronger side but you wouldn’t of noticed it  with both sides up and down, and Cornwall just clinching the final point when Somerset’s ball flew out of the greenside bunker deep into some undergrowth on the far side, a slightly over powered shot from steady Jack Coward, but a great come back from partner Theo Anderson Gannon, but alas Cornwall had a short putt for the win and with the sound of the balls hollow echoes clankering inside the cup we were left with a 2 ½ - 1 ½ deficit.

With a brief stop for Sandwiches and chips it was down to Somerset to make a turn around, and boy what a turnaround, Paul Middleton our President had joined us for the rest of the day and witnessed the events that unfolded before us, With Captain of the match Stanley Richardson leading the way and getting to 5up then dropping down to 2up Paul and myself were panicking and hoping Stanley could keep his nerve but luckily Dewi John came to the rescue and finished his match with a brilliant win on the 12th hole, all I can say what happened next was a managers dream, it seemed where every we turned Somerset boys were finishing there matches early bring Somerset point after point, new to the team was Dewi’s brother Dylan John, Dylan was the only boy to lose his match in the afternoon but that had nothing to do with his standard of play both Dylan and Cornwall’s Jonty Jenkins were playing a very high level of golf with Jonty occasionally using a putter but mostly chipping in, Dylan would make a great shot to the green then Jonty would use his wedge and either slamdunk it or put it 6 inches by the hole, I believe he had 3 chip-ins, a very close match indeed.

A great achievement from all the lads and a little help from Granny Wobblies Fudge.

My thanks go to Paul for coming all the way down to Cornwall and Trethorne GC for making us most welcome and for a fabulous course.
