We were treated to an afternoon of quality golf and high tension at the Under 14 and Under 12 Championships at Wells Golf Club. In the end, we had the drama of a playoff with Ashton just edging out Freddie Turnell on the first extra hole. Both boys ended the day as champions as Freddie reclaimed the Under 12 title he won in 2015.
The weather was set fair for the day and the course was in excellent condition for the 36 boys who were taking part in this years event. Dewi John from Saltford set the early pace with an opening 39 on the front nine. In a strong final grouping, defending champion started with a disappointing 7 before regaining his composure, and 4 pars saw him end the first half with a score of 43. New boy to the County Stanley Richardson and Ashton were involved in a close battle before an ugly 9 on the par 5 eighth hole from Stanly tipped the balance in Ashton's favour. A front nine total of 36 gave Ashton a 3 shot lead at the halfway stage.
Dropped shots from Asthon on 10 and 14 gave Freddie an opening and he showed what a true champion he is with a strong finish, birdies on 14 and 16 saw an inward 9 score of a 1 over par 36. Ashton scored a 6 on 18, leaving Freddie the chance to win if he could find a par. In the end, Freddie managed a 5 to take us to a sudden death playoff.
A large gallery accompanied the boys to the 1st, where both boys slightly overshot the green withtheir 2nd shots. Playing first, Freddie nearly chipped in for a 3 and Ashton left his putt short of the hole. First away again and Freddie's putt narrowly missed again leaving Ashton a putt for the title. He nervelessly found the centre of the cup to take the title. What a great competition played in an atmosphere of great sportsmanship and true friendship.
Our thanks again to the members and staff at Wells Golf Club who were wonderfully hospitable hosts.
A chilly breeze did nothing to dampen the spirits of our Junior golfers as they met to contest the Under 14 and Under 12 Championships at Wheathill Golf. Andrew England and all the staff pulled out the stops to give us the warmest of welcomes, and the members were full of encouragement for all of the competitors.
The wind was definitely a factor out there, the strength of which can be seen by the effect it had on the Presidents expensively coiffured hair! However, we were taken aback by the quality of golf, particularly when Jack Coward from Long Sutton handed in his card showing a gross 84. Playing off a handicap of 32, we were sure that he would feature amongst the prize winners.
In fact, the only score that was better came from last years Under 12 Champion. Freddie Turnell from Burnham & Berrow shot a 79 in the last group out to clinch the title and the silverware. Jack was the clear winner of the Under 12 Championship. The prize for the best net score went to Will Brookes from Saltford.
Our thanks again to the Wheathill Club for allowing us the use of their course, and to the parents and supporters of the boys for giving them the opportunity to compete.
