Report We hosted Devon at Cannington Golf Club which is a nine hole course played off different tees for the back nine, the greens were excellent and the club looked after us extremely well considering the size of the club house and thanks go to Karen and Gareth the assistant professional who was multi-tasking and made a great waiter, barman and oh yes a pro. We were also supported yet again by our President Paul Middleton and my thanks to Paul who I believe has come to every under 14’s match this year.
The morning foursomes we’re not looking good to start with and the boys seemed to be struggling but then Devon boys also started to struggle and the golf on both sides was not great and being all square for the morning was a fair result.
A different story for the afternoon singles with both sides showing some excellent golf, and Dewi John making a crucial 15 foot putt on the third whist a pack of four dogs invaded the green, unfortunately the ball lipped out making one of many for Somerset, both sides were playing well but a complete reversal of Somerset’s triump in Cornwall with the Devon boys putts dropping and ours not. A convincing win from Alex Marshall and a well earned half from Ashton Wylie made the final result 8 ½ - 3 ½ to Devon. (perhaps I should have bought more fudge).
This was one of our Jack Roberts League matches with Dorset in the driving seat again this year, we still have one league match to play against Wiltshire in October but we now can’t win and will be down to Dorset and Wiltshire.
