In a highly competive match between two well matched sides, honours were even in the match between the Under 14 teams from Somerset and Devon.

The match was played at Long Sutton and the course was in very good condition with greens that were running fast and true. The sun stayed behind the clouds for much of the day and the temperatures were decidedly more autumnal  than high summer! Long Sutton is a course that is in high demand, and to make maximum use of the tee times, the players went out in fours to play the single matches.

Leading out for Somerset, Freddie made an uncharacteristcally slow start which gave his opponent an early lead. Although he rallied, Freddie could never quite overturn the deficit and the first point wen to the visitors. Troy Young gave another controlled performance as his game swung to and fro before Troy clinched the first point for Somerset, winning 1 up. The next two games went to the visitors. After another see-saw battle, Alex Frame lost 1 down on the final green. Finley fought to the end but was forced to concede his match 3 and 2.

The tide turned back in Somersets favour as Peter McGivern won another tense game. The testing 18th green saw Peter hold his nerve to win1 up. Earlier, Josh Barlass was irrepressible as he carved out a more than convincing 8 and 7win.

The match was to be decided by the final pairings, anda draw seemed the most likely result as the boys teed up on the 16th. Our Under 12 County Champion, Owen Roach, playing his first match at this age group, lay dormie 3 up. Another debutant, Alfie Bassett-Flowers, was dormie 3 down. Could one player win the final 3 holes to claim victory for their County? Both gmes were halved on the 16th, so each side won a game 3 and 2, and the match was halved 4-4 and a very fair result.

Our thanks go as ever to the Club for allowing us the use of the course, and to our opponents for a very enjoyable match. Thanks also to the parents and families of the players of both sides . The boys did you proud!
