We were very pleased to welcome Gloucestershire to Wells Golf Club for our friendly match. The format of the match was greensomes giving the boys the opportunity to play with a partner. The weather was kind to us with a cooling breeze sparing us from the heatwave of the previous few days.
Captain for the day was Finley Pyke paired with fellow Taunton & Pickeridge member Peter McGivern. From the opening tee shots it was clear this would be a closely contested game with neither side able to establish an advantage. Our boys were made to work hard for the opening point that was finally secured on the 18th green.
In the secongd game, Za ne Bignell and Owen Roach formed a highly promising partnership with a hugely impressive round of 8 over par. They had to wait until the 16th green to win their match as the Gloucestershire pair rolled in a tricky long range putt on the 15th green to take the match to the 16th. They were unlucky when a putt to extend the game still further horseshoed out of the cup, securing a second point for Somerset.
Bertie Billson and Henry Lewer battled it out in the third game. They were 2 down after 3 holes before levelling the scores before Gloucestershire pulled away again. Bertie and Henry came back to all square again. The opposition managed to open up a 3 hole lead to win on the 16th. Our boys showed great determination and spirit - we were proud of them!
The final game saw Theo Lamey and Theo Jones bring home the winning point for Somerset, closing their game out on the 15th.
This was a very encouraging day for Somerset Golf, we have a team with talent and a growing team spirit, reflected again on the putting green with another impromptu putting competition.
Thanks to Gloucestershire for their part in the day, and to the members and staff at Wells for looking after us all so well.
