A fixture in Cornwall on a Friday afternoon in the school holidays was probably not seen as an ideal arrangement at the outset, but it turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding match for our Under 14 Squad. The team returned home with a convincing 6.5-1.5 win after a display of good golf from both sides.

We were warmly welcomed by our hosts with the Team Managers Mark and Lee arranging a change to the starting times after the unfortunate cancellation of the Under 16 fixture. We were grateful to the management at the Club who were able to get us away earlier to make the day a bit shorter.

Our Captain Freddie got ther match underway with a cracking drive off the team and that set the standard for the golf that was to follow. His game was closely contested throughout, played in great spirit before finishing all square on the 18th green.

Troy Young carried over his sparkling form in strokeplay so far this season into matchplay to record a fine 5&4 win in the second game, with Alex Frame sealing his win 1 up on the last green in the 3rd game.

Finley Pyke notched another point for Somerset with a 3&2 win followed by Ryan Bowden, recovering from 2 down after 2, to also win 3&2. After recovering from tonsillitis, Peter McGivern found himself 2 down at the halfway stage before staging another recovery to win his game 3&2. A consistent display of all round golf came from Luke Burbridge in game 7 as he too recorded a 3&2 win. Our only reverse on the day was in the last game when the multi-talented Wills House, a very good tennis player and cricketer, had his first experience of county golf. Wills was a very last minute call up to the team and we were very pleased to welcome him into the Red Army.

One final and very positive note was another display of the team spirit that exists within the squad. Captain Freddie led the team back onto the course to support the last 2 players as they finished their games.

Wills nearly chipping in! Boys reaction

Our thanks go to the Club and the Cornwall team for providing a challenging test of golf and the warmest of welcomes. Final thanks to the parents who undertook the driving and to their support on the course. As we faced the drive home, potential traffic delays could be countered with a feeling of a well deserved win!
