The Somerset team lost narrowly at Lydney Golf Club in the friendly against Gloucestershire in a keenly contested match. The match was played as a Greensomes to allow the boys to become familiar to playing as pairs in readiness to transition to competitive golf in the Jack Roberts League when they move up to the Under 14 team.
Our opening pair, Jack Isaacs and Team Captain Nicholas Watson battled hard but could not quite overcome the early lead that Gloucestershire had gained. One down going up the 18th, they eventually lost 2 down. Our 2nd pairing, Henry Lewer and Reece Tucker always had the advantage over the opposition, but the game was still close on the 18th tee. Somerset were 1 up and Gloucestershire were caught out by the pond by the green to give our boys a win by 2 holes.
In Game 3, Alexander Leonard and Bertie Billson ran out convincing winners. Despite the scoreline of an 8&6 win, the game was ultimately decided by the superb short game skills of Alexander and Bertie as they capitalised on a blistering start. Game 4 was another win for Gloucestershire as Oscar Alexander and Harley Wickham tried their best, but had to accept a 4&3 defeat to worthy opponents.
With 2 points each, the result hinged upon Game 5 where Tate Sinfield-Day and Lewis Walters were engaged in a tight tussle with fortunes swinging one way then the other. In the end, Gloucestershire pulled away in the closing holes to secure the match for the home team.
As Team Manager, I was immensely proud of the way that our boys performed on the day. They were supportive of each other and communicated well, discussing and deciding tactics on every hole. There was some very good golf on display which was a credit to their home coaches and particularly to the work that has been done in our own training sessions run by Chris Coles. We should be proud of this squad. Thanks to our team, their parents, grandparents and supporters for making this a day to remember.
Finally, I would like to thenk Tom Gillespie and his Gloucestershire team for the match which was played in great spiirit, friendly yet competitive which is what we look to achieve. The reception that we received from Lydney Golf Club was absolutely second to none. We were honoured to be welcomed by Club Stalwart and former President of the Gloucestershire Golf Union Alan Robinson who acted as the Official Starter and Host for the day. I would like to come back to Lydney for future matches!
