Somerset Under 14s got back to winning ways as they travelled to Folke Golfe Club to face Dorset. The weather was not very promising for this Jack Roberts Memorial League fixture, grey skies and periods of drizzle throughout the day. The Greens Staff at the Club had done a very good job in maintaining the standards of the putting sufaces, and the fairways were showing signs of recovery from the drought. The rain would have been very welcome!
The morning foursomes got Somerset off to the best possible start as Peter and Owen won the opening game, came out on top in a tight battle, winning 1 up. Ryan and Finley lost out to a strong Dorset pairing, going down 2&1. Somerset went in to lunch with a 3-1 advantage, following wins for Wills and Neo ending with a 2&1 victory, supported by a fine performance from Theo J and Jack who secured a 3&1 win.
Following an excellent lunch, the boys headed out to contest the singles games. Captain for the day Peter enjoyed a closely contested match, but a strong finish from Dorset gave them a 2 up victory. Ryan continued his run of form. establishing an early advantage before closing out his game 5&4.
Needing another 2½ points for an overall win, the next four games were very competitive, with some excellent golf on display. Fortunes swung with each player doing his best for the team. Finley came from behind to secure a ½ point finishing all square. Owen trailed his opponent in the early stages before his persistency paid off. and ended up by winning 3&2.
Theo J had to face a strong comeback from his opponent who chipped away at the lead Theo had established. TJ holed a testing putt on the 18th to earn a half, with a celebratory fist pump that was well deserved!
We were now in a position where we could not lose with a total of 6 game points and three more still to be decided. The Somerset tail wagged strongly, as Neo fought his way back to secure the winning point, ending 1 up on the 18th. Wills always seemed to be in control of his game, and his determination paid off with a 3&2 win. Jack was another who took early control of his game, but his opponent threatened to rally before Jack closed out with a 5&4 margin of victory, leaving the final score 9-3 in our favour. The match was closer than the scoreline might suggest, and all credit to both teams for the quality of golf and the spirit in which it was played.
In their speeches both Captains praised Folke Golf Club for their hospitality in allowing us the use of their course. The greens were in good condition, the teams enjoyed some excellent food and the welcome from the members and staff was second to none. We enjoyed our visit to the Club.
Our final match in on 30 August when we entertain Wiltshire at Long Sutton Golf Club. Devon are unassailable at the top of the League but a Somerset win will give us a very creditable second place finish. The Red Army marches on!
