Somerset Under 14s finished their season in a thrilling battle with Wiltshire in the Jack Roberts Memorial League. The margin of victory was as close as it could be with just 1 point in it.

The day began with both sides competing for the runners-up slot in the league, the outcome would be decided on the day with Wiltshire holding a ½ match point advantage over us. Devon had already clinched the title with a total of 3½ match points. A win for Somerset would allow us to leapfrog Wiltshire into second place. A half or a win for Wiltshire would be enough to keep their position. It really was a day when anything could happen.

Somerset started well with Noah and Finley winning the opening foursomes game with a 1 up victory. Game 2 went the way of Wiltshire as Owen and Zane went down 3&2. Ryan and Theo L put another point on the board for us, winning 2&1, but we went into lunch all square as Joss and Theo J lost by the same score-line.

Wiltshire took the attack to us in the afternoon singles by winning the first three games. Both Noah and Ryan went behind during the early holes. Despite rallying in the middle, they could not get back onto terms, Noah going down 5&3 with Ryan losing 3&2. Finley and Owen were both involved in very close games that ended up with a 1 up loss for Finley before Owen got a point for us by winning 1 up.

Zane was made to dig deep to secure a half in his game. His never - say - die attitude ensured parity at the end. Joss got another point for Somerset in another close encounter , holding on to win 1 up. The attention switched to the final two games on the course. Wiltshire were in the Clubhouse with 5½ points, needing just another ½ needed for that second place finish. The match was decided on the 17th green where Theo J and Theo L were both 1 up on the tee.

None of the players managed to find the green with their tee shots. Both Wiltshire boys went long with their chips, with one of them having a really awful position at the back of a bunker. Both our boys ended nearer the flag than their opponents - but whose putts would drop? Sadly for Wiltshire, neither of their putts found the cup. Our two Theos trusted their techniques, held their nerves and secured their pars! Two points, the win and runners-up!

This really was a great way to finish the season in a close match against worthy opponents. Thanks to them for coming along and the spirit in which it was played. Thanks also to the Club and our army of supporters. It has been a great journey!
