The team travelled to Honiton for the opening match in this yearsJack Roberts Memorial League against Devon. The weather was dry but there was a strong and cold wind blowing that did not let up all day. Honiton is a tight course so accuracy was needed to avoid the penalty areas and trees that featured along many of the holes.

The morning foursomes were keenly contested with both sides securing 1 point each at an early stage. Finley and Owen were first on the scoreboard for Somerset with a 5 and 2 win. Johnny and Thomas came up against a strong home pairing who took an early lead that our boys were not able to claw back. The final 2 games could have gone either way, but eventually the points went to Devon who went into lunch with a 3-1 advantage. Our team were not downhearted and went out for the singles matches in good spirits.

Devon increased their lead winning the first 2 games out on the course. Noah was finally edged out after an enthralling battle. Ryan came up against an opponent who played some outstandingly good golf, finishing just 4 shots over par for his round.

The tide began to turn back in Somerset's favour as Finley cruised to a 6&5 win, Owen secured his point with a glorious up and down from 100 yards to take the game 2&1 Theo J was in sparkling form in winning 7&5 with Thomas closing out his game to win 2&1.

The match score now stood at 5-5, and any result was possible. Johnny and Theo L arrived on the 18th tee with their games all square. Both Devon players had fought back to parity after being behind for large parts of the games. In the end, and amongst great excitement and tension, the result came down to the final putts. Johnnys opponent rolled one in from 20 feet to win, and Theo held his nerve to sink a testing one to earn his point. Final score 6-6.

This was a great way to start the season, with a thrilling climax to a competitive match played in a competitive and friendly spirit. Our thanks to all the players and management team from Devon for their warm hospitality, and also the catering team at Honiton for supplying us with some wonderful food on the day. Thanks also to our Parents and Supporters for their encouragement with a special word for the team who dug in and did themselves proud.
