Somerset 9-Hole Champion of Champions

The R&A and England Golf are both actively promoting the concept of 9 hole golf competitions in response to growing interest amongst the golf community. There is clear evidence that, with people being short on time but still wishing to play competitive golf, that shorter tournaments are the answer. It is keeping more players interested and, very importantly, encouraging ex players to return to the sport. We were approached by Simon Stevenson, the Director of Golf at Taunton & Pickeridge, who suggested that we run a county wide competition to find the best of the best.

The SGU Executive fully endorsed the idea and raised the subject at our recent AGM, and were delighted to find that the Club delegates were in favour. Since then, the Somerset Ladies County Golf Association has also come on board to promote the competition. Each Competitions Secretary at all of our 30 clubs has been contacted to invite them to run a qualifying competition, where their own champions will be invited to a final to be held on the Channel Course at Burnham & Berrow on October 13th. We are all indebted to the club for making this beautiful 9 hole course available to us. Each club can nominate 4 categories of winner for the final, men, ladies as well as seniors of both genders. Trophies are being donated the SGU President and Vice-President as well as the SLCGA. There will be more than prestige to play for, and we are receiving sponsorship for the event from our friends at Brittany Ferries.

If you want to be involved in the competition, please make sure your Club registers its participation through the Competitions Secretary at the Somerset Golf Union.
