Somerset Bowl Final 2016

TThere was another well fought contest in the final of the Somerset Bowl competition in 2016 between Long Sutton and Worlebury Golf Clubs. The players arrived at the host club Wells with the weather set fair, the overnight rain had cleared and the sun had broken through the clouds. As the teams gathered on the first tee the rain returned and there was a scramble for the waterproofs! The sides were announced onto the tee by the current and immediate Past Presidents of the SGU, each with a vested interest in supporting their home clubs. Doing his best to be impartial. Tommy Tulk was secretely supporting Long Sutton whilst Brian Evans was more overtly encouraging his beloved Worlebury. I believe that a small wager was struck!

Long Sutton seemed to have the upper hand in the early stages, and as the players completed the 8th hole, they held a slender advantage, up in 3, down in 1 with the other match all square. In the first match, Long Sutton's Paul Wills and Nick Northey were coming under pressure from Mark Otterburn and Zach Shepherd. Despite holding a 2 hole lead after 8, they were pulled back to all square after 12, and were dormie 3 down after 15. Worlebury claimed the first point with a 3 and 2 win.

The second match between Norman Banfield and Steve Southgate for Long Sutton and Worlebury's Simon Dempsey was close all the way through. Worlebury approached the 18th green 1 up, but a battling win from Long Sutton meant the match was looking at extra holes.

Behind them, Keri Allchurch  and his partner Martin Green were always keeping just ahead of their Long Sutton opponents, being 1 up after both 8 and 12 holes. Wes Allen and Kevin Purdy kept battling away and were all square after 15 before eventually coming through to win 2 and 1.

In the 4th match, Hugh McGuire and John Parkinson seemed to be holding off the challenge from Jack Partridge and John Wright. They eventually won through with a 3 and 2 victory.

The final Worlebury pairing of Alex Winn and Joe Dale were always up against it in their match against Jay Brodie. They were giving 8 shots to their opponents, who took full advantage and played some very good golf to win comfortably 6 and 5.

The trophy and mementoes were presented to the teams by County President Tommy Tulk. He thanksd and congratulated Wells Golf Club for hosting the final and presenting the course in such good condition. He also praised both Clubs for the sporting but competitive spirit in which the final had been played - a point endorsed by both Captains.

Weston-super-Mare win the Somerset Bowl

The Somerset Golf Union knockout competitions came to a thrilling climax at The Mendip Golf Club on October 11th. The final was contested by near neighbours Weston-super-Mare and Burnham & Berrow, and was played in a competitive but always friendly atmosphere.

The first match pitted Darren Henderson and Neil Urch, representing WsM against Adrian Deakins and Neil Darby. The Burnham pair were giving 6 shots to their opponents and knew that they faced a tough game. Weston took the lead and held on to win 3 and 2 against determined opponents. Weston-super-Mare appeared t be in control in match 2, with Dave Edwards and Peter Allen dormie 3 up after the 15th. However, a very spirited fightback saw Will Crandon and Dave Pearce take the next 3 holes to force the match into extra holes. The Weston pair steadied their nerves and par was good enough to win the match and the point.

The third game out was close all the way, but Captain Glenn Taylor and George Worthington eventually win 1 up over Jack Palmer and Harvey Sampson to give Weston the third point needed to win the Bowl.

John Pelling and Jon Barker won the 4th match for Burnham & Berrow, beating Chris Evans and Andy Balcombe 1 up in a match where fortunes ebbed and flowed. Match 5 was halved between Tim Rees and Ashley Collis and Ron Schroder partnered by Tim Blood from Burnham & Berrow.

Both Captains, speaking after the match, thanked both sides for their efforts during the season, and for the spirit in which the game was played.
