What a difference a day makes! The Under 18s Greenaway Trophy game at Enmore Park was played in glorious sunshine. In the foursomes Somerset were unlucky to lose two games on the 18th 1 up but still took a 3 – 2 lead into the afternoon singles thanks to good performances from Kieran Babbage & Will Warman,Alex Manley & Kieran Babbage and Seb Church & Steven Blake.
The afternoon singles were very tight and after 10 holes the biggest lead for either side was a single shot.
Steven Blake found some great form and secured the first point with a 6 + 5 result. Seb Church also played the back nine in great style to secure a 2nd point with a 5 + 4 win.
Devon picked up points in games 3 and 4 levelling the singles.
Taylor Stote, Kobe Adams and Alex Manley were involved in very close games and all went to the18th. We secured a win and two halves to take the lead.
George Worthington and Will Warmans games came to an end on the 17th with Devon taking both points.
So everything hinged on the final game. Matt Ison from the U 16s was making his debut for the U 18s. He lost the 17th to square in the match. That left the game and match to be decided on the par 5 18th. Both players hit drives down the left. Matt’s second landed 25yrds short leaving a difficult down hill chip. Devon found the left hand bunker. Both played excellent third shots , Matt had an uphill 3ft put , Devon a similar distance from the left. It looked odds on a halved game and match. Matt holed out showing little signs of nerves. Devon unfortunately missed giving Matt the game and Somerset the match 8 – 7 and the Greenaway Trophy having completed wins against both Cornwall and Devon.
Congratulations to the boys. Thanks to Enmore Park, the course was presented in excellent condition. Many thanks to President Tommy Tulk , Nigel Long and Richard Dix for their very welcome support. Devon must also be congratulated for putting up a spirited fight ..
