Team Somerset got their season back on track in a closely fought encounter with a strong Cornwall side. Played at the home club of Somerset Captain Neil Mossman, the Oake Manor course was in splendid condition and set a worthy challenge to the teams.
It was the visitors who got off to the better start, winning the first two foursomes matches. Matt Pearson and Curtis Edwards stemmed the tide by securing a half in their match, before wins from Ali Balcombe and Jeremy Larcombe, then Tom Sloman and Will Poole to send the sides in to lunch all square.
The afternoon began with Cornwall's Joe Cruse easing past Jamie Clare before a run of successes from Somerset turned the match in our favour. Will Poole, Tom Sloman, Phil White and Sam Fernly all came out on top in their games, overcoming spirited performances from the Cornishmen. Curtis Edwards narrowly failed to get anything out of his match. losing 1 down on the 18th green. Jamie Li tipped the match back in our favour with a 3 and 2 win over Aaron Stephens before Jeremy Larcombe secured the win with a half point from his game with Jared Mortimore. Ali Balcombe won his game with Conor Wilson but Matt Pearson lost the final game to the very much in for Rob MacGregor.
The Captain and Coach were both very pleased with the win and the strength of character shown by the players to perform so well under pressure. Our final match of the season will be against Glamorgan on August 28th.
Finally, our thanks go to the Director of Golf Russell Gardiner and all of the team at Oake Manor for providing both an excellent course and wonderful hospitality for the players and officials fromthe sides. We look forward to returning for the Annual County Dinner in November.
