Somerset travelled to the picturesque, if a little remote Thurlestone to face the challenge of Devon. A strong northeasterly wind during the practice round gave us a taste of what was to come the following day.
The wind was not quite so strong but the exposure of the cliff top course meant that there was still no hiding place. It does however, give you quite stunning views of the coastline. Cliffs, beaches, the estuary, the arch, the island and turn around to see some quite stunning seaside properties. This place is beautiful.
We were 5-0 down at lunch. There was the promise of some better weather in the afternoon. The morning was surprisingly cold but the sun was trying to poke through the clouds and it did eventually appear as Paddy Maclennan came back from 3 down with 4 to play to claim a 1/2 on the 18th green. We lost the match by 141/2 to a 1/2.
The surprisingly lush course and the skills of the Devon boys combined to give us a lesson that few of us will forget. At least we have the solace of Burnham and Berrow for our next match against Gwent.
