Somerset 8½ - 6½ Gwent

The Seniors gained their first win of the season at Burnham and Berrow. Gwent were a little surprised to find themselves out on the Channel course in the morning four balls. Their lack of experience on the course did not show as honours were even at 21/2 - 21/2. It was pleasing to see debutant Neil Folland and County Champion Steve Francis gell well in game three and the ever dependable Alex Kidd and Steve Thomas securing the other full point. Ian Perkins secured the 1/2 point on the last where his drive was wide enough to avoid the thick stuff and his two putts were enough after Gwent could not get up and down from right of the green.

The afternoon weather behaved itself for the majority of the field. With six players connected to Burnham, Somerset were soon in a comfortable position. From a strategically high sand dune and with a good pair of binoculars the majority of the Somerset boys had the honour going through the turn. As they came back into sight Stuart Robson, James Ward, John Whitcutt, Andy Selway and Richard Streeter were all at least three up. They were all able to relax with their afternoon tea as the final 1/2 point for victory was fought for. The weather turned and the last three got wet. It was left to new boy Folland to return with a thumping 6&5 triumph and the point we needed for our first victory of the season.

Although Gwent returned over the bridge defeated, at least they had all discovered a gem in the Channel course and it is an honour for all of us to play the Championship course. Our thanks go to all at Burnham who made us so welcome. If they had kept the rain away for 40 minutes more, it would have been perfect.
