When we are good, we are good but when we are bad, we are very bad. Somerset Seniors travelled to Whitchurch in Cardiff with the chance to go top of the Channel League. Twenty four hours later that seemed a distant dream as we were hammered by a strong Glamorgan outfit. As the team sheets were exchanged I noticed new names on their sheet which was confirmed when I saw their captain handing out new shirts in the car park. The course was very damp with lush fairways and soft greens. It played a lot longer than the bare yardages on the card.

The morning four balls has been our strength in recent games, so it was a shock to be 5 - 0 down at lunch. It was left to Danny Dowell and John Whitcutt to salvage some points for us in the afternoon singles where the majority of our team suffered heavy defeats. I think we can safely say that we were second best on the day.

It has certainly been a mixed season. The narrow defeat by Wiltshire and the mauling by Devon was gradually eased by three good wins in the following months. It is a pity that we finished on another low but that is sport. Nineteen different players pulled on the red shirt and it was pleasing that the three debutants all made winning starts. The 2017 season awaits - once more unto the breach dear friends!
