The Under 18s played the first of their Greenaway Troph matches against Cornwall at Mendip Spring on 28th July. The course was presented in great condition with fast running greens.
Somerset got off to a great start with a convincing 6&5 victory from Kobe Adams and Captain William Warman, both of whom played some excellent golf. There was another foursomes win from the Worlebury pairing of Jack Partridge and Charlie Camper with a birdie 3 on the 17th. Huxley Howell and Dylan Xanh were unlucky to lose on the 18th after having putts on both the 16th and 18th to halve the match. Overall, the morning finished with Cornwall edging ahead to lead 3 - 2, - a fair reflection of the play.
The start of the singles was delayed by some very heavy rain. We were then entertained by a number of very hard fought and close games. Unfortunately, Somerset lost 6 games on the 17th green, failing to capitalise on a number of opportunites to level games. Great credit to Kobe Adams who rolled in a 40 ft putt on the 18th to secure an unlikely half.
We then had to wait until games 9 and 10 for Somerset's only other singles points from Huxley Howell and Charlie Camper. Both featured in very tough games and the pair played well under pressure to secure their points.
A disappointing result but a much closer match than the final score suggests.
My thanks to Tommy Tulk (President) Paul Middleton (Vice President) and Tony Brown for their support and to Mendip Spring for providing excellent facilities and hospitality on the day. The next match is at Farrington Park on the 1st of August
