The U 18s final match of the season was played in the Greenaway Trophy on a fabulous hot summers day at Downes Crediton v Devon.
Somerset got off to a slow start in the foursomes and never recovered . Apart from the Worlebury pairing of Charlie Camper and Jack Partridge, who just failed to hole a 10ft put on the last for a half, the away team were outplayed. It was always going to be difficult to come back from 5- 0 in the foursomes.
In the afternoon singles Somerset came out fighting and wins from Kobe Adams (Taunton and Pickeridge) Tom Barker (Burnham) and Josh Higgs(Wells) in three of the first four games gave us hope. In a number of close matches, we just failed to convert with Jack Partridge and Charlie Camper losing on the 18th. So despite further wins for Matt Ison (Enmore) and Seb Church (Saltford), we failed to find the necessary points and lost the match 10 – 5.
The match ends a disappointing match play season for the U 18s. We now look to defend the team and individual titles in the Channel league play offs in October.
My thanks go to all the boys who have represented the County this year and to their parents for their support. To the boys leaving the U18s I wish them every success in whatever path they take including education, work and, of course, golf.
Thanks to County Chairman Derek Hanson for his support at the match and to Downes Crediton GC for their hospitality and support on the day. The course was well presented and set a good challenge.
