The match was played on a generally fine day at Burnham & Berrow.
In the morning, over the Channel Course (9 holes), most of our foursomes pairings struggled badly. They were down after 3 holes and never got back on terms with their opponents who had only played the course for the first time the previous evening. Last year, we were very fortunate to achieve parity in the morning (also over the Channel Course) in our match against Gwent
If we are fortunate to have B&B next year as a home venue in our SCL schedule, we’ll need much more practice over the Channel Course
So, to be 1- 4 down at lunch against a team as strong as Devon was an extremely unenviable position
However, Somerset heads did not drop and our players fought back in the afternoon singles over the Championship Course
After a fine win in the top match by James Ward, Devon succeeded in the following 3 matches which meant that they only needed one more point for victory. They had to wait until the final two matches to secure it as fine wins from Somerset’s middle order – Alistair Johnston, Steve Francis, Peter Davies & Matt Lazenby plus a halved match by Tim Harris in Match no 9 certainly held the attention of all spectators right to the end
We were well supported throughout the day by both other Squad Members and SGU Officers
Sincere thanks are due to Burnham & Berrow for staging the match, facilitating practice and looking after us so splendidly throughout the day. Of particular note was the excellent quality of both courses. The decision to cut fresh holes on the morning of the match - thus preventing the away team from starting with an advantage – was much appreciated
Our next challenge is a SCL match against Gwent at St Pierre on 19 June
