Report: The match was played in fine weather.

Once again, most of our foursomes pairings did not start well. Given that the am foursomes matches comprise only 9 holes, faltering starts are very difficult to recoup. That said, Tim Harris & Neil Whisler, in Match 3, steadied the ship with a good victory which was followed by Matches 4 & 5 both producing hard fought halves

We were therefore 2 – 3 behind at lunch and needing a fast start in the pm singles

The fast start after lunch did not materialise as we lost the first 4 singles match. The records will show that Simon Harris in Match 3 lost by one hole against the hugely experienced Bob Broad. However, Simon recovered from dormy 4 down to take the match down the last hole and was only denied a halved match by a huge reversal of fortune on the 18th

Once again, newcomer, Martin Cashnella produced one of our top performances by contributing 1.5 points out of 2. A feat equalled by Neil Whisler who was called into the team from the sub’s bench. In Match 5, Peter Davies had his hands full all afternoon before finally coming through to win on the last green

This was our heaviest defeat to date – and of course losing, like winning, can become  habit forming

However, my own observations and those of our indefatigable Vice President, Geoff Ogden and Barry Simpson lead me to believe that our course management, shot selection and concentration levels were stronger than they had been during our previous SCL match v Gwent

Our post - match evaluation processes indicate that player commitment remains high and the new faces introduced this year are starting to produce sound results and are gaining in confidence

Gloucestershire proved to be a fine, rejuvenated side but our challenge for the remainder of the season certainly won’t get any easier. Gloucestershire, prior to turning up at The Mendip, had only played one SCL fixture – they lost to Cornwall – a team we have yet to play!

Right now, I believe that the Senior Squad is: “bloodied but unbowed” and we need to stick at it and keep going. Next up, we have the SWCGA 36 hole stroke play event over Orchardleigh on 27 & 28 July
