Report: The match was played on one of the hottest days on record. Given that the marvellous trees at St Pierre offer protection from any wind, the playing conditions on 19 June were truly stifling – particularly during the pm singles

Most of our foursomes pairings in the morning were untested but, in the main, they performed well which resulted in our being ahead 3 – 2 at lunch with two of the matches being halved

In the afternoon, James Ward, in the top match, continued his recent good form. Always in command, he finished a comfortable winner by 3&2

What followed was very disappointing as we could garner only two further points from the remaining nine singles and therefore lost the match overall by 6 – 9

Our debutant, Martin Cashnella (Bath) produced a fine win on the last green against the Gwent captain. This, coupled with his halved match in the morning foursomes marked a strong debut

After each match we carry out an evaluation of our performance (based on both individual self- assessment and observation). It is therefore likely that an addendum will be added to this report when that process has been completed

Next up, we have the SCFQ event at Chipping Sodbury on 26/06 followed by our next SCL match. This will take place at The Mendip on 06/07 against Gloucestershire
