Match Commentary
The match was played in fine weather over a course that was in fine condition. Whilst the
course was brown, hard and fast running with deep rough awaiting an errant shot, the
greens had been well watered and were able to hold well struck approach shots - from the
fairway
We were decisively beaten in the am foursomes only one of which (Match 3 ) finished on the
final green where Martin Cashnella’s six foot putt to secure a halved match rolled agonisingly
past the edge of the hole. Our only success came in the anchor match were Danny Dowell and
Paddy Maclennan came very close to whitewashing their opponents
Down 1 – 4 at lunch, we desperately needed a fast start in the pm singles. In the top two
matches, James Ward and Steve Thomas fought very hard against excellent opponents. The
standard of play was uniformly high throughout. Both matches finished on the final green and
both were halved. This meant that nothing less than a stunning performance from our
“middle order” was required to give our opponents pause for thought.
Alas, the stunning performances were provided by Gloucestershire who played splendidly
throughout and won matches 3 – 8. With the overall result never in doubt, Steve Palmer and
Paddy Maclennan fought on and played strongly to win Matches 9 & 10
Both teams commended Stinchcombe Hill staff for their collective efforts in producing both a
fine test and excellent hospitality
