Match Commentary
1. The match took place in very testing, windy conditions over a very well prepared course that was in excellent condition
2. After the morning foursomes were tied, Wiltshire edged ahead in the pm singles. They gained their 5th singles point rather too early for comfort which put the Somerset “tail” under enormous pressure. However, starting with Steve Francis’ win on the last green, Somerset managed to win three out of the last four matches. The last of those also included a nerveless last green win for Danny Dowell
3. Danny’s win may have been “nerveless” as far as he was concerned - but it certainly wasn’t for his beleaguered captain whose endemic constipation cleared up as if by magic!
4. I’ve highlighted Steve’s and Danny’s last green heroics because, by the time these took place, Wiltshire had been “safe” (with their 5th singles point secured) for an awfully long time and defeat was staring us in the face. However, their efforts would have come to naught without the earlier sterling efforts of their team colleagues – as can be seen from the match results matrix
5. Overall, this was a well- earned halved match against a fine team who won the Senior Channel League in 2016 and qualified for national finals in 2017 by winning the Southern Counties Foursomes Qualifier. Given Somerset’s run of woeful performances in the latter, this result might just provide us with some solid evidence that we can “mix it” with the stronger teams with whom we must compete
6. A very famous person (I think it might have been me), once said:
“If you think you can’t, you won’t. If you think you can, you might”
Bring it on!
